On the “appointed day,” it was fitting that Eswatini (formally known as Swaziland) and its status as a British Protectorate ended while the Sun was in the constellation of Leo. King Sobhuza II (Swaziland’s new head-of-state) was known as Ngwenyama, the lion. The king descends from a long line of royal ancestors that go back to Nkosi I (1355–1400).
The official transfer of power happened at midnight, at Mbabane, in Ezulwini, the Valley of Heaven, some 304 miles (490 kilometers) northeast of Maseru. When it finally occurred, bonfires crackled and fireworks exploded atop Sheba’s Breasts, the twin peaks that overlook the valley.
