Mauritius Astrology Piece

Mauritius tropical Ascendant (10GE35)
Mauritius tropical Midheaven (16PI27)

It was Monday, 3 December 1810, at 10:00 am, east of Antananarivo (pronounced Tah-nah-nah-reev) in Mauritius. On this island in the middle of the Indian Ocean a Document of Capitulation was signed.

The document was agreed upon earlier at 1:00 am. It was signed in the Pamplemousses District where the British headquarters on Mauritius, the Gibraltar of the East, is located. That day was a Monday. The British conquest of Mauritius began its cycle that came to a close, on a Tuesday, at the Champ de Mars, a racetrack in Port Louis.

The Scene at Independence

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam is walking toward a Mauritian police officer and a lieutenant of the British Royal Navy. At 68, Ramgoolam, the Prime Minister of Mauritius, will start to spend his life shouldering the leadership responsibilities. He has a small bodily frame. His spirit is resolute—he is neither too thin nor too wide.  He isn’t lanky in build or plump but somewhere between the two. The Prime Minister is known as “The Father of the Nation.” He walks a few steps behind Sir John Rennie, the British Governor General of Mauritius. The Governor General is dressed to the nines. The PM is wearing a regular suit and tie. His shoulders and arms are held naturally and relaxed. His steps are in sync with the Governor General’s, though playing counter to the governor’s steps.

He takes short steps, humbly and with focused and intent. The GG stands ramrod-straight in his full regalia. His left hand rests on the hilt of his sword. He takes longer steps. Both their movements taken together express an interesting contrast that can become a metaphor of duality for the nation. Sidereal Taurus rises as the two men move to the flagpole, flanked on either side by the police officer and the Navy lieutenant.

The Mauritian Lagna (Ascendant)

Taurus’ earthy energy represents Mauritius and her people—the secret of Mauritius’ success lies in the ground. Rohini is the Lagna nakshatra that represents agriculturists, cultivation, growth and food. According to one Vedic astrologer, “This is a growth-oriented nakshatra, ruling crops and fertility.” In Mauritius, the land is a major
resource—49% is arable. Her Taurus Ascendant rules Mauritian earth and her cultivation.
